Si Rubber,Silicone Rubber Properties and Disadvantages
Silicone rubber (or Si Rubber) is the most commonly used synthetic ruuber or polymer. This rubber has similar bond structure as found in glass, sand and quartz. Silicone rubber is composed of silicone- which is itself a polymer- together with hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. This is a unique synthetic elastomer which is made from a cross-linked polymer that is reinforced with silica. The characteristic of silicone rubber is such that it provides the perfect balance of mechanical and chemical properties that is required in today’s most demanding industrial rubber applications.
Properties of Silicone Rubber
All types of silicone rubber compounds possess characteristics of both inorganic and organic materials. Due to the versatile properties of silicone rubber, it offers a number of advantages that are not found in other rubbers. Silicone rubbers have fine electrical properties, good chemical stability, flame retardancy, and excellent resistance to heat and cold.
Properties of Silicone Rubber
- Silicone rubber has higher heat resistance and chemical stability that help it in providing better electrical insulation.
- It has high elasticity and compressibility as well as excellent resistance to cold temperatures.
- Silicone rubber has resistnace to wide temperature range. It offers excellent resistance to extreme temperatures, the range of which can be from minus 100°F to plus 500°F. This rubber can be used indefinitely at 150°C that doesn’t lead to any change in the properties of silicone rubber. It can withstand the temperature of 200°C for 10,000 hours or more. Some of the silicone rubbers can even withstand heat of 350°C for short periods.
- Silicone rubber has outstanding oil resistance at high temperatures. From among other common types of synthetic rubbers, nitrile rubber and chloroprene rubber have somewhat higher oil resistance at temperatures lower than 100°C but at higher temperatures, silicone rubber is superior to all other rubber types.
- Silicone rubber has exceptional weather resistance. Ozone created by corona discharge does not deteriorate silicone rubber. Thus, silicone rubber can be exposed to wind, rain and UV rays for longer periods without any change in its physical properties.
- The tensile strength, tear strength, elongation and compression set of silicone rubber are far superior to conventional rubbers. The tear strength of silicone rubber is usually around 9.8 kN/m. Certain high-strength types of silicone rubbers also come with tear strength between 29.4 kN/m and 49.0 kN/m, achieved through polymer modification and/or judicious selection of fillers and crosslinkers.
- Thermal conductivity of silicone rubber is higher than most of the other rubbers. Silicone rubber with high thermal conductivity are used to make products like thermal interface sheets and heating rollers.
- Silicone rubber has excellent moisture and steam resistance. It can be immersed in cold, warm or boiling water for longer periods with water absorption of about 1%. This doesn’t affect its mechanical strength or electrical properties. When it comes in contact with steam under ordinary pressure, there is no deterioration of silicone rubber. However, high pressure steam at temperatures above 150°C can cause breakdown of the siloxane polymer and a decline in the properties of the rubber.
- It is metal detectable.
- It glows in the dark.
- Silicone rubber is also electrically conductive.
- Apart from being resistant to oil, silicone rubber is also resistant to chemical, acid and gas.
- Silicone rubber is flame retardant and has the property of low smoke emission.

Disadvantages of Silicone Rubber

- Silicone rubber is generally high in cost.
- It is sensitive to substances like sulfur clay that may prevent the silicone from curing which is known as cure inhibition.
- Silicone rubber is usually very thick, having high viscosity.
- It must be vacuum degassed before pouring to minimize bubble entrapment.

- Compounds: These are ready to use materials which can be pigmented and catalyzed for your processing equipment and end application.
- Bases: These silicone polymers contain a reinforcing filler. The bases can be further compounded with additives and pigments that produce a compound which meet your color and other fabrication needs.
- Liquid silicone rubber (LSR): This rubber system can be pumped into a suitable injection molding machine which then can be heat cured to produce molded rubber parts.
- Fluorosilicone rubber compounds and bases: They maintain many key properties of silicone, but also has other characteristics of superior chemical, fuel, and oil resistance.

What are Rubber Expansion Joints?
Rubber Expansion Joints are defined as connectors between vessels or used in all systems transporting fluids, slurries or gases operating under pressure at widely different temperatures. Applications of rubber expansion joints
HVAC Applications
Rubber expansion joints are used in a variety of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, which includes commercial and industrial buildings, hotels, apartments, schools, shopping plazas and aboard ships to relieve stress in ductwork. Rubber expansion joints are installed to isolate equipment like pumps, compressors and chillers from the piping system. A variety of configurations of joints are available accommodating different shapes, service and connection requirements.
Process Piping
Protection of a process piping system is an important use for rubber expansion joints. The joints reduce noise and vibration caused by forces in pumps. They also centrifuges by behaving as a shock absorber in systems handling abrasive slurries, corrosive chemicals, or very reactive liquids or gases. Thermal movement in a piping system can also be avoided by using rubber joints. The excellent chemical resistance of rubber and synthetic elastomers make these joints ideal for process piping systems.
Power Plant Applications
Nuclear and fossil fuel plants use Rubber expansion joints so as to reduce thermal expansion and contraction on condenser lines, condensate lines, steam turbine exhaust lines, aeration systems and cooling water lines. Reliability, large size capability, long life, and the ease with which they accommodate themselves to movements make these expansion joints ideal for power plant applications.
Industrial Ducting Systems
Rubber expansion joints have been installed in demanding industrial ducting systems where there are problems like heavy vibration, dry or wet corrosive materials, flutter etc.
Marine Systems
Eliminating the destructiveness of electrolysis and at the same time insulating against the transmission of sound, rubber expansion joints allow the necessary motion and flexibility in a ‘moving’ ship’s piping system. The compactness, resilience and low stress features of rubber make these joints ideally suited for shipboard piping systems. The rubber joints are popularly used in areas like auxiliary condenser, air intake on diesel engines, overboard discharge line between condenser and hull, ventilation lines, flush and sanitary systems, fire and bilge pumps, to name a few.
Pollution and Wastewater Treatment
Water treatment plants, waster water treatment plants, Sewage treatment plants, and air scrubber systems all employ the use of rubber expansion joints. Due to their resistance to abrasion and corrosion as well as their flexibility feature, rubber expansion joints are ideal to be used in raw and secondary sewage lines, sludge pumps, centrifugal air blowers, scrub stacks.

What is Rubber?
Technically speaking, rubber is a natural polymer of Isoprene (usually cis-1,4-polyisoprene). It is hydrocarbon polymer occurring as milky latex in the sap of various plants and can also be made synthetically. A small percentage (about 5%) of other materials like proteins, fatty acids, resins and inorganic materials (salts) are also present in natural rubber. Rubber, as mentioned earlier too, can also be made artificially or synthetically. The type of rubber which is produced artificially is called synthetic rubber.
In simple terms, rubber can be defined as a sticky, elastic solid which is produced from a milky liquid known as latex obtained from various types of rubber trees.
Different Types of Rubber
There are basically two broad categories into which the rubber types can be placed. These are- Natural Rubber and Synthetic Rubber. Sometimes vulcanized rubber is also taken to be a type of rubber. Lets know about all these types of rubber.
Natural Rubber
The elastic material which is obtained from the latex sap of trees is called natural rubber. Natural rubber can be vulcanized and finished into a various types of rubber products. Various types of tropical and sub-tropical trees in the regions of Amazon, South East Asia and Africa produce the milky fluid latex that are in the form of latex tubes. The rubber molecules present in these latex tubes are made up of 5 carbon and 8 hydrogen atoms. A large number of these rubber molecules are joined with each other to form long, chain-like structure. This chain of rubber molecules is called polymers that gives rubber its property of elasticity.
Synthetic Rubber
Any kind of artificial elastomer (a polymer) is called synthetic rubber. An elastomer can be defined as a material having the property of elasticity. Thus, the type of rubber made from chemicals to act as the substitute for natural rubber is the synthetic rubber. There are various types of polymers used for making synthetic rubber types. Due to this, different types of synthetic rubbers have different properties that are tailored for specific needs of rubber products industries. Vulcanized Rubber
Vulcanized rubber, though made from natural rubber, is sometimes taken to be a separate kind of rubber. Natural rubber, in its original form, is not suitable for industrial or commercial purposes. In fact, natural rubber has many such properties that decreases its usability as commercial rubber type. For example, it has too much water absorption capacity, low tensile strength, very low abrasion resistance and it is easily affected by organic reagents too. Therefore, the process of vulcanization is used to improve the properties of natural rubber and to convert it into a useful industrial rubber type.
Vulcanization, thus, is the chemical process used for converting rubber or related polymers into more durable materials by adding sulfur or equivalent curatives. Vulcanized type of rubber material is less sticky and has superior mechanical properties than natural rubber. The hardness of vulcanized rubber depends upon the amount of sulpher used during the process and the degree of this hardness determines as to which industry could use the vulcanized rubber for making various products. For example, if 5% of sulphur is used during vulcanization, it will produce tyre rubber. Ebonite is made by adding 20 to 25% sulphur and battery case rubber is made by adding 30% of Sulphur during vulcanization. Other products made from hard vulcanized rubber include bowling balls and saxophone mouth pieces etc. Less harder vulcanized rubber is used for making various household and industrial rubber products like shoe soles, hoses etc.
